Environmental Health Specialist III

Job Description

The Georgia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities (DBHDD), is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Environmental Health Specialist III at Central State Hospital (please visit http://www.centralstatehospital.org/) for more information about the hospital).

 

 

Job Description:

Evaluates programs for compliance with environmental laws, rules, and regulations. Recommends monitoring and enforcement/corrective actions. May serve as lead worker and/or supervise support staff.

 

 

Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards:

 

1. Performs job responsibilities with minimal supervision

 

2. Serves as job expert or organization resource in assigned areas

 

3. May supervise and/or direct the work of others

 

4. Interprets regulatory issues, technical issues, and analytical data to document compliance

 

5. Investigates complaints, provides environmental education and technical assistance

 

6. Performs inspections, interviews, technical reviews and recommends enforcement actions as needed

 

7. Plans and conducts facility audits and inspections

 

8. Prepares sampling plan and collects samples in accordance with established procedures

 

9. Provides information to the public, regulated community, and enforcement officers regarding the environmental laws and

 

10. Responds to environmental emergencies and conducts safety evaluations

 

11. Reviews permit applications; drafts, modifies and issues permits in accordance with the rules, regulations and established procedures

 

12. Reviews permit requirements and regulations in order to ensure compliance with state and federal environmental laws

Qualifications

Completion of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university which included at least 40 quarter hours, 27 semester hours of laboratory sciences AND Two years of environmental compliance experience OR One year of experience in a position equivalent to the lower level.
 

*Must obtain SAFETY CARE certification by completion of new employee, and must maintain this certification as a term and condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates, who in addition to meeting the above qualifications also meet the following:  Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Biology or related field.

Employment Information

This position is located at Central State Hospital in Milledgeville, Georgia.

Central State Hospital was founded in 1842 and was Georgia's first psychiatric hospital. Its purpose was to provide a safe and humane place for the mentally ill and mentally retarded.

The medical complex encompasses about 1,000 acres. The hospital, a middle Georgia mental health/developmental disabilities/ substance abuse facility, serves 23 counties in middle Georgia and has specialty programs serving citizens from the entire state of Georgia. Central State Hospital is accredited by JCAHO and certified by Medicare.

Milledgeville is located in historic central Georgia only 95 miles southeast of downtown Atlanta.

Milledgeville, the 4th capital of Georgia, is one of only two planned capital cities in the United States - the other being Washington, DC.
