Job Description

East Central Regional Hospital, located in Augusta Georgia, is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Physicians Assistant.

East Central Regional Hospital is a state operated facility with two campuses, Augusta and Gracewood.

The Augusta campus is a psychiatric hospital that provides care to people with severe and persistent mental illness. The Augusta campus also provides Forensic services. There are treatment units and malls, activity areas, administrative and support buildings on a 310 acre campus.

The Gracewood campus is an ICF/MR and Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF) that provides care and services to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Gracewood consists of living areas, activity areas, administrative and support buildings spread over a 420 acre campus.

Job Description, Responsibilities, Standards, and Qualifications

Job Description:

Provide healthcare services typically performed by a physician, under the supervision of a licensed physician. Conduct complete physicals, provide treatment, and counsel clients. May, in some cases, prescribe medication.


Job Responsibilities & Performance Standards:

 

Administers or orders diagnostic tests, such as x-ray, electrocardiogram, and laboratory tests

1. Conducts timely evaluations of patients in order to determine their need for admission.
2. Documents findings and recommendations according to established guidelines.
3. Obtains a patient history and completes a physical and mental status examination under the clinical supervision of a physician within established timeframes.
4. Makes appointments and coordinates timely referral of patients to outside/external specialty services.

1. Under clinical supervision, orders timely and cost effective laboratory, radiological and other tests/investigations according to established guidelines.
2. Monitors results of investigations and takes action as appropriate.
3. Coordinates internal and external health related services, such as dental and vision exams and emergency care.
4. Makes appointments and coordinates timely referral of patients to outside/external specialty services.

Develops comprehensive plans of care

1. Ensures that patients' human rights are safeguarded in accordance with legal statutes and established guidelines.
2. Assists the physician in writing timely physician's orders for precautions, restrictions, investigations, medications and consultations without over- or under-utilizing hospital/clinical resources.
3. Meets with and educates patients and family members as needed.
4. Provides physician-supervised, clinical services outside the hospital/clinical as assigned.

Develops comprehensive plans of care

1. Monitors patients' responses to treatment and recommends modification of treatment plans as patient's condition changes.
2. Participates as a member of an interdisciplinary treatment team in formulating timely, cost-effective individualized treatment plans.
3. Documents significant alterations in patient's condition, treatment or privileges and keeps physician informed.
4. Assists physician to ensure that patients are not dangerous to themselves, dangerous to others or gravely disabled at the time of discharge.
5. Completes discharge documents according to medical staff guidelines.

Examines clients to obtain information about their physical condition

1. Participates in the activities of the medical staff, on assigned committees and in educational programs.
2. Actively participates in the Quality Improvement Program toward maintaining established standards.
3. Actively participates in Medical Peer Review and Risk Management Program.

Examines clients to obtain information about their physical condition

1. Obtains and maintains proper university faculty status.
2. Instructs Physician Assistant Students and Medical Students as per affiliation agreement.
3. Provides feedback to university in accordance with agreement.

Instructs and counsels clients about prescribed therapeutic regimens, normal growth and development, family planning, emotional problems of daily living, and health maintenance

Interprets diagnostic test results for deviations from normal

 

Makes tentative diagnoses and decisions about management and treatment of clients

 

Obtains compiles and records client medical data, including health history, progress notes and results of physical examination

 

Performs therapeutic procedures, such as injections, immunizations, suturing and wound care, and infection management

 

Prescribes therapy or medication with physician approval

 

Visits and observes clients on hospital rounds or house calls, updating charts, ordering therapy, and reporting back to physician

 

May supervise support and/or lower level employees

 

Sample Technical Competencies:

 

·         Knowledge of assessment tools, interviewing, and physical examination techniques

·         Ability to formulate diagnosis based on examination and test results; Able to interpret test results, identify deviations from norms, and intervene or make appropriate referrals

·         Ability to assess, plan for, and provide basic nursing skills; knows procedures including developing, implementing and revising plan of care

·         Ability to prescribe certain medications as part of a treatment plan gaining physician approval when needed

·         Ability to document problems and/or needs identified from the treatment plan; competent in completing treatment plans

 

Qualifications

A current license to practice as a registered professional nurse AND completion of a masters degree from an accredited college or university in the respective nursing specialty AND authorization of the Georgia Board of Nursing for the specialty area OR Eligibility to obtain certification to practice as a physician assistant through approval by the Composite State Board of Medical Examiners
